I'm on a gigabit and
eth0: link up, full duplex, speed 100 Mbps

Works with my laptop

Any idea on what to check ?

How are you verifying the speed?

I installed ethtool and obtained the following output whilst eth0 was connected to a 100BASE-T connection:

~# ethtool eth0
Settings for eth0:
Supported ports: [ TP AUI BNC MII FIBRE ]
   Supported link modes:   10baseT/Half 10baseT/Full
                           100baseT/Half 100baseT/Full
                           1000baseT/Full
   Supports auto-negotiation: Yes
   Advertised link modes:  10baseT/Half 10baseT/Full
                           100baseT/Half 100baseT/Full
                           1000baseT/Full
   Advertised auto-negotiation: Yes
   Speed: 100Mb/s
   Duplex: Full
   Port: MII
   PHYAD: 0
   Transceiver: external
   Auto-negotiation: on
   Link detected: yes

I then connected to a Gigabit connection and got the same output, except for:

   Speed: 1000Mb/s

Conclusion: it definitely should work so long as you are connected appropriately. Can you verify the actual speed from both ends?

Maybe this thread should be moved to an other part of the forum ?

I performed the apt-get dist-upgrade on the delivered SheevaPlug(879).

I did verify by consol term(usb) and leds green+yellow.

Did unplug/plug the rj45 and got a kernel crash in usbserial/ftd... on my laptop.
ssh connection working. unsure what happend,

ssh still working.
installed ethtool

ethtool eth0 didn't support the device.

On the unit with id 878  a unpluging of USB lead to a kernel crash.
Can an eth0 disconnect do something with USB ?

I'm not sure what happend here.

Will ethtool work on a stock install(as delivered) ?

Don't worry about it. We'll move it if necessary.

Hmm ... I tried it out on a stock model and the answer seems to be  .... No:

~# ethtool -i eth0
Cannot get driver information: Operation not supported

So I think we return to the original problem ... or a new problem, since you describe some disconnections, and I am not clear on the sequence of events.

Do I understand correctly:

You unplugged the RJ45 and the serial connection to your laptop dropped?

And you did something with the USB socket and the SheevaPlug crashed?

I have configured around 50 plugs for different boot scenarios, so I learnt quite a lot about the behaviour of the serial connection. And in some models the serial connection dropped when a USB device was connected. I never had any reason to remove the ethernet cable so I have no information regarding that. But if you are reporting a temporary dropping of the USB / serial connection, that would seem to be "normal", if not desirable. If you are reporting a crash, that does not seem right. Can you confirm that a simple USB device such as a memory stick may be mounted and read successfully?

If you are unplugging cables and your host is misbehaving, that surely is an issue with the host?

I'm no expert on USB, but that does not seem OK.

2 cases

 on id 878
removing the usb serial crashed the driver/kernel on the host Computer, that's a fedora problem.

on id 879 connected to a IBM R50 with fc9(I can also run ubunty jaunty or centos 5.4 )
I didn't touch the usb connection (that i'm aware of) just unpluged/pluged the rj45 and the host usbserial/ftd... crashed
I'm not sure what happed, was just trying to get a 1000 connection
I had 2 connections serial and ssh.
ssh worked afterwards and I had the power off the host to recover.

RJ45 cable connection is busy at the moment.

I will check if USB work with a stick and also if I can repeat the RJ45 plug/unplug using serial and ssh.
What can't be repeated is hard to trace. but unpluging RJ45 should only have an effect on RJ45-circuit or ?

Any logging that (don't uses the serial port) to  turn on to see whats happening?

On verifing RJ45 speed
What is required to get ethtool running.
How should the LEDs indicate for 100Mbit and for 1000Mbit ?

I can't repeat any problem.
I have been unpluging/plugging  both RJ45 and mini USB.

RJ45
Switch lights 2 green = 1000Mbit/s
Maybe  autonegotiation played a trick
Only differens from earlier is that a put a gigabitswitch(GS108) at my desk ie short cable to Sheeva.
GS108 had no problem to get 1000Mbit/sec. It's a GS105 in the other end.

Sheeva
Nov  8 14:09:29 sp879 kernel: eth0: link down
Nov  8 14:09:38 sp879 kernel: eth0: link up, full duplex, speed 1 Gbps
Nov  8 14:10:03 sp879 kernel: eth0: link down
Nov  8 14:10:08 sp879 kernel: eth0: link up, full duplex, speed 1 Gbps
Nov  8 14:10:21 sp879 kernel: eth0: link down
Nov  8 14:10:29 sp879 kernel: eth0: link up, full duplex, speed 1 Gbps

USB
Mounted a memorystick and created a file
Mounted same on host and verifed that file existed

I noticed that the mini usb is a loose fit

ethtool
ethtool eth0
Settings for eth0:
No data available

On the model I just tested, both yellow and green lights on the ethernet port light up when connected; the speed of the connection does not cause different lights to appear.

I wasn't entirely clear about the problems that you were reporting, but I hope I understand you correctly that those problems are no longer present.

The serial port connection isn't the tightest, and some people have managed to dislodge the connector accidentally. One one or two models that I have tested, the hole in the plastic case isn't lined up perfectly, but I haven't seen any where the plug doesn't fit, or is so loose as to fall out.

On the other hand, I have experienced difficulties from time to time with establishing serial connections from my Ubuntu host. That is to say, after I upgraded to Karmic Koala a few days ago, I am seeing only one serial port; it looks like the same issue reported here. And I very often have experienced line drops when inserting (most commonly) a wireless stick into the Sheevaplug (a stick that I have yet to get working, as it happens). I assume that some kind of voltage drop is occurring when the device is inserted, and the line is dropped. However, since the line but can be immediately re-established, I don't consider this a problem (and even if it were, it's not certain that it would be an issue with the plug, it could be the host).

I wonder if the reason ethtool doesn't work on your system is related to the kernel. I've done a lot of searching (and I'm sure you have too); I found exactly that question posed (but not answered) here. Provisionally, I think we have to say that the answer is no, it doesn't work.

Please let us know if you have any outstanding questions or problems.
