Hi,

I was about to invest in a small NAS when I discovered the Sheevaplug.

I have a couple of questions I hope you guys can help with  Smiley

1. Does it have an easy to use interface?
2. If I buy a Sheevaplug with Debian (Squeezeserver) will it be plug and play with Squeezebox Duet?
3. If i connect a 2.5 USB HDD with the Sheevaplug, will it be easy to transfer all my music to the Sheevaplug HDD?

I have never used Linux, so it needs to be fairly easy to configure and use.

Hope you guys go easy on me  Cheesy

1 - The SheevaPlug is a Development Kit, you can change the operating system, and installing any software which is needed.
But by default there are no nice frontends installed , it`s up to you to install that.
The most popular user interface which you can install after is webmin , which allows you to easy ? ( easy maybe not , but via a gui ) and set up services like apache , ssh , samba etc.
2 – no idea
3 - If i connect a 2.5 USB HDD --- the hard-drive doesn`t want to be self powered , the shevaplug as problems powering 2.5 usb hdds , you need a powered hub
Will it be easy to transfer – yes , with winscp !!! , pick the file you want to copy on the left of the screen and where to copy on the right , click copy and wait .

I have never used Linux, so it needs to be fairly easy to configure and use. YES and NO , that depends on you

If you don’t want to spend the time configuring a plug , you should go for something like the tonido_plug  http://www.tonidoplug.com/tonido_plug.html

Hi,

1. Does it have an easy to use interface?

If you class yourself as a beginner, the answer is probably no. At some point you would have to use a command line interface. Unless you are used to using the command line under (say) DOS, it might take a bit of getting used to. (But it's not difficult).

2. If I buy a Sheevaplug with Debian (Squeezeserver) will it be plug and play with Squeezebox Duet?

A Duet is a standalone Squeezebox player, right? If so, the answer is yes; you can install Squeezebox server very easily:

Code:
wget http://downloads.slimdevices.com/SqueezeboxServer_v7.5.1/squeezeboxserver_7.5.1_all.deb
dpkg -i squeezeboxserver_7.5.1_all.deb

3. If i connect a 2.5 USB HDD with the Sheevaplug, will it be easy to transfer all my music to the Sheevaplug HDD?

The Sheevaplug doesn't have a hard drive as such; it has a small amount of internal storage. Better to plug in an external hhd permanently. The only issue there is that you might have to install a package so that your (e.g.) NTFS drive can be read. Again:

Code:
apt-get install ntfs-3g

If you are willing to learn, and the idea of learning sounds like fun, there is much to enjoy. If you aren't willing to learn, and see the configuration as a chore, well, maybe the answer is different.

Hi again,

Thanks for the quick answer  Smiley

In the god old DOS days i played a little with command lines (turning on/off sound, mouse etc. to get enough memory  Wink), but never played with Linux.

Im very willing to play around/learn about Linux - so I guess Ill give the plug a try.

Ill be back with a shi..... of questions when it arrives.

Regards
