apt-get dist-upgrade changes root password?

Hi!

I just started the plug and followed the (most of the) steps at:

Anyway. At the section "Upgrading the existing Ubuntu install" I ran the three steps:

apt-get update
apt-get dist-upgrade
apt-get autoremove

The next instructions tells you to "You may want to test making a new ssh connection".
I missed this step and I'm stuck!

The plug answers to ssh and I have the usb-cable working to access the console. Still, the root password has been modified in some way?!?


Any kind of help is welcome...

apt-get dist-upgrade should not change the root password.

There were some reports on the plug computer forum whereby root login failed after the default password was changed and some upgrade steps. I don't believe that any specific sequence of events was identified that would cause this, and this is the first report we've seen here.

If you can't log in as root (and you have no other suitable user available), you would have to boot from an alternate source, chroot or mount the file system that is under discussion, and reset the password.

Or use the installer to rewrite the entire filesystem.
