well, the good news is that it's all back up and running. The bad news is that I haven't figured out why or what happened. I think it was probably something to do with a kernel update, or possibly a dodgy sd card (I still get  lots of 'uncorrectable error : end_request: I/O error, dev mtdblock0, sector 0' peppered throughout dmesg).

I may be back soon....but I hope not! thanks for all your help

--- UPDATE ---
bad news folks. it's gone again, and this time seemingly for good. Now I have nothing but the green light and the two networks lit up full when it's plugged in. No flashing. Nothing. dmesg doesn't recognise there's anything there, so obviously I can't connect to it via usb.

last time there was a slight power cut around the time it died, but this time there was nothing. I was ssh'ed into it, doing my normal work (text editing, nothing strenuous), and it just stopped.

If no-one replies to this message within a day then I'll assume no-one's seen it and start a new thread. For now...I'm screwed :-(

--- addendum ---
I should add, hitting the reset button for any length of time also does nothing.  I'm 99% sure this one's always had a flaky power supply, because it's always exhibited otherwise inexplicably temperamental behaviour

sorry for the big pause, I've been working off a temporary setup with a laptop and only just got round to dealing with the sheeva. Anyway, no change, I just tried it and it's still completely dead. So, where do I go now? If someone at newit could get in touch with me by email it would help a lot. I'm not sure if it's still under warranty or not, but if someone emails me I'll send the serial number

Thanks

yeah, I did a whole lot of searching before posting. I did have Jason's email address from discussing problems before, but unfortunately my address book went down with the sheeva.

I'll try to pm him, thanks

If it turns out not to be under warranty you may be able to repair it (if you can wield a soldering iron).
Googling 'sheevaplug', 'repair' and 'fix' pulls up a few personal blogs that will point you in the right direction.
Eg http://www.instructables.com/id/How-to-fix-a-dead-SheevaPlug/

NOTE: rectified mains electricity is nastier than the normal, take great care if you go down this route.

thanks, I've pm'd Jason, so we'll have to wait and see. I've looked into the power supply replacements a number of times, but I don't feel confident enough to do it myself. On ebay there's a guy in germany offering to do it for a fee, but I'm not sure I'd ever see my sheeva again. I also don't know for certain that it's the power supply without someone taking the cover off and testing it. I'll wait and see what Jason says then move on from there.
Thanks
