Author Topic: Cloning uSD  (Read 349 times)

I am working on a project for which I will need to use a few dream plugs. I have updated the binaries and cleaned up the distribution on one, which took me a total of about 20 hours as I was learning as I went along. I guess now the same work will take me about 2-3 hrs per unit.

Now I want to clone that setup to the other dreamplugs. I know just enough to be dangerous, so I'd appreciate any help.

I thought of making a dd image of the uSD to a SD card, then writing it back to the uSD on the target system. What I don't know is if I can overwrite a running system.

So I have these vaguely formed ideas of booting up from a RAM disk on the target, then overwriting, etc.

I don't have a JTAG unit, but if it is a necessary I guess I can get one. In that case another option would be to make the image on a SD card, boot from that, then overwrite the uSD.

Someone mentioned tar/untar--I don't know if that would work. Without the JTAG I am afraid of screwing up the unit and bricking it, so being very cautious.

Perhaps there is a better way that I am missing.

Any other thoughts, recipes for how to accomplish this?

Thanks

You shouldn't think of overwriting a running system.
I would take the uSD cards out of the DreamPlugs and use dd to copy the image across.

The alternative would be to get a jtag and a normal-size SD with a system on it and enough space for an image of the uSD and tweak all the plugs to boot (temporarily) off the external SD - lots more work and time as far as I can see.
