When dist-upgrade was running it came up with a new version of dhclient but noticed I had recently changed something so it gave me a choice. I declined this upgrade in case it meant it would lose the fix.
Right or wrong?

There were a bunch of other things that gave me a choice too. I just accepted them.
Bit un-nerving for a newbie - perhaps some warning could be in the instructions.

IIRC It doesn't matter, since the new file contains the same fix that you manually added. apt-get simply observes that you customised the file, it doesn't investigate the nature of your change.
