Hi,
I've written a wiki describing to set up a Squeezeboxserver on a SheevaPlug. There are also images of complete installations or just Debian on sd-card available.

Take a look if You like:

Thomas -

I spotted a couple of things this evening:

  • yuk_ethaddr does not need to be set to the plugs MAC address. In all the examples I have seen it is set to 00:00:00:EE:51:81. I'd have to do some research to determine how this is used (actually, I don't think it's important), but the instruction to set it the plug MAC address is wrong. setenv yuk_ethaddr 00:00:00:EE:51:81
  • On the same subject, setenv ethaddr 00:50:43:01:4C:41 would clone the MAC address of my plug (the one I am working on now). I normally try to remember to obfuscate the MAC address when posting environment variables. Your instructions should explain that ethaddr should be set to the MAC address of the plug, read from the sticker on the back.
  • ssh keys - you may need to regenerate these. If your images have the ssh host key already generated, then all downloaders will be using plugs with the same host key. This is bad security. To regenerate the keys, the user should enter the commands below. See also http://www.softec.st/en/OpenSource/DevelopersCorner/HowToRegenerateNewSsh.html

To regenerate ssh keys:

Code:
ssh-keygen -q -f /etc/ssh/ssh_host_key -N  -t rsa1
ssh-keygen -f /etc/ssh/ssh_host_rsa_key -N  -t rsa
ssh-keygen -f /etc/ssh/ssh_host_dsa_key -N  -t dsa

Hi Marcus.
thanks a lot for your review!

1. done* Please note that you have to setup the ethaddr to your MAC-Address (look it up from the backside of the Plug).
2. done: setenv ethaddr 00:50:43:xx:xx:xx
3. SSH keys: I'll do it next days.

Did you read my mail? I made some chages you may download the newest version from my blog. See here http://gs-ts.de/squeezeplug

I don't see any mail from you since the shopping cart issue from a week ago. Am I missing something?

It's been a while since I visited the slimdevices forum; I noticed today a lot of recent activity. We're trying to push ahead with our own Squeezebox preconfiguration, but it's been hectic recently on account of the new eSATA plugs, and (as you will see in the next day or two, hopefully) a new shop.

Thanks for this - I was clueless and only got around to installing debian squeeze when I realised it was much better for packages etc..
So far my plug has been going great for months. Its now a LAMP server - (Linux Apache Mail Php) where I am running fetchmail to get all the mail in my mail accounts and a IMAP mail server for my laptop and PC so mail doesnt go missing. Its got a website up and running as well. What a great bit of kit.

I hope you can give me a bit of advice on the eSATA front as I am a complete Linux newbie?

I followed (to the letter) the procedures on creating a 'squeezeplug' and it works perfectly.  I bought a 2Tb SATA drive that's in a USB/eSATA external enclosure formatted to NTFS.

It works perfectly with USB, but would like to switch it over to eSATA (higher speed, less CPU etc).  Any ideas on how I can achieve this based on the uboot/debian build on a SD card that is part of the wiki guide?
