Creating Users Help

I got my plugs yesterday and less than 24 hours 

I have installed webmin and used it to create a new user.

The problem I am having is that if I ssh in as the new user using cygwin, I find that it is almost unusable. Very few commands work but that is not the only problem. I have also found that I cant use simple editing like backspace either. If I su from there into root, then all works as it should do.

Is there somthing wrong with the default config that needs hacking or am I missing the blindingly obvious?

If the following helps, the setup did create a new home dir and the group was setup with the same name as the user. Plug is ubuntu 9,04 multiboot.

What commands don't work?

What messages do you see when you attempt a command that does not work?

What is the shell that you are using?

Not sure whether I was right about commands, but you did help me.

My user was allocated /bin/sh  I changed this to /bin/bash which is what root was using. It would seem that there is a problem with /sh as /bash is fine?

The main problem was that basic shortcuts and editing such as cursor keys, tab key and backspace would not work.

Different shells are ... different, it doesn't mean that there are problems with them as such. You can choose the shell that you prefer.

Thanks for your help Marcus, it seems that I have made an incorrect assumption that sh and bash were the same. After that interesting read, I am obviously wrong
