I have been happly using a WL500gP router which runs a small embedded linux (oleg) in its 32MB memory, 8MB flash and attached 1TB USB drive.
I was going to upgrade the router to a RT-N16, but its going to be a while till a version of Openwrt linux is stable on it, so couldn't resist getting the 5 watt sheeva unit. The sheeva box is double the spec of even this new embedded linux router, and so alongside memory hungry processes like X-MAIL, I should be able to run real processing hungry apps.

I will be wanting to run something called ASTERISK which is a VOIP PBX which runs on linux. (the VOIP box is on my lan and is accessible to the plug via its ip address). Has ASTERISK been compiled for this box and is anyone using it?

Hi,

Asterisk is already compiled. You can just use apt-get to get it installed. I was wondering if someone could make it working with simple GUI like Freepbx etc.

Askozia is based on Asterisk and has a nice GUI:

But not yet ported to ARM platform:

I notice that ztdummy is not available. I tried to use module-assistant and auto-install with zaptel but it complains that ztdummy is not available. How do we get ztdummy installed onto the plug so that we can get conference/parking working. Any help would be appreciated...

I know it ain't the same thing, but I have just successfully compiled Freeswitch v1.0.5 and am now connecting my IP phones / XLite to the server. I originally got the idea from Linux Magazine, september '09.

I am using an eSata 'plug with a 1G drive attached. I only had one compilation error, using G++, which is probably due to the ARM implementation of the inbuilt structure 'va_list' as used in module 'sofia.c'. I already had some .xml configuration files for Freeswitch in a previous incarnation so copying these over has simplified installation. Now if I could remember what I set my phones passwords are...... Embarrassed

So there is an alternative to Asterisk though since i have not used that, I cannot compare with freeswitch.

Modified to add:-

Two Cisco SPA921, one Snom 320, a Linksys PAP2T VoIP phones attached; several windows PC's using X-Lite, trunk connections to two external SIP providers active on the Sheevaplug. Traffic levels are very low but testing shows no server issues. I am considering adding the Skype module to Freeswitch which should improve inter-family connectivity. Lots of bells and whistles to add but the basic system works. I wish I could get a better internet connection but with no fibre and a significant distance from the serving exchange limits DSL bandwidth.

I have my asterisk up and working. But there are features like conference and others not working. When I looked around it seems like ztdummy was not available. In your setup, is conference working?
