Sheevaplug is running, as I can see phypmyadmin, but when I try SSH login with Putty, I get network connection refused.  I've tried hard powerdown without any joy.

Please help

Did you install and enable a firewall by any chance? Or did you shut down sshd?
Either way, serial would be my way of fixing it.

With ssh unavailable, and if there is no other software installed that provides equivalent functionality, the only way to investigate at this point is to establish a serial connection.

I managed (after a lot of messing around) to establish a serial connection to the box from a linux system.

I logged in and took a look around and the system seemed to be working ok.

I restarted ssh using the command above and no error was returned but... my problem is that I then had to unplug (powerdown) the plug and re-connect it to the network.  and guess what -connection refused again.

My linux box is a large server which cannot run where the router/hub is located.   I have been unable to get any of my (windows) laptops to establish a direct serial connect with the plug, they just don't see it.

What I would like to do is serial connect, check that ssh is enabled, powerdown and restart, check again if it is then OK if not, then change settings so SSH auto starts.

How do I check ssh enabled?
How do I ensure it auto starts?

/etc/init.d/ssh restart

I suppose that if there are problems, you should see a message other than:

Code:
* Restarting OpenBSD Secure Shell server sshd                           [ OK ]

And then, if the error message doesn't explain everything, you google the error message.

Those words router/hub is ringing alarm bells.  If you are trying to SSH through the router backwards (ie from the outside in) then you need to port forward 22 to the sheeva plug.

Grin  Just thought I'd give an update.

Got serial connection on my ubuntu server (this didn't show in dev straight away, it took about 20 minutes, and I still don't know what triggered it showing as /dev/ttyUSB1.

Puttyd in and installed openssh - edited .allow file to allow all local connections.

Powered down and plugged back into network and hey presto Putty works from Windows 7 / Vista / XP Smiley

My hard disk has also been recognised, I don't have a clue why, sda1 'suddenly' appeared.

mounted it as ntfs and it works fine.

Now have web server, samba share to 160Gb, X desktop with Mozilla (runs OK), MySQL (no data at moment), what else, oh yeah Mono, but haven't tested it yet.

Bought 500Gb ext hd (powered) and small 4 port hub today.  Chrissy pres for self - tomorrow I'll try twonky (just put that on Windows server, and media plays better than from local disk.

After that I intend to try trixbox / asterisk and then maybe myth tv.   dIf anyone can break one of these I will Smiley

Next up hows about dotnetnuke under mono  Roll Eyes
